Low relief sculptures

Bio One of Barbara Smith-Gibson, life purpose was to become a sculptor. When she starts to create, her inner being becomes energized to the point to where she need to become grounded, because of the Free-Spirit that lives within.. She finds solace in her creation. ​ Barbara received her BFA from Wayne State in 2001. She was not aware of her gift as a sculptor, until she was in her fifties when she attended Wayne State. This is when she was told by her sculpture teacher John , she was a natural, now Barbara is about eighty. She attended Henry ford Community College, Center of Creative College, Schoolcraft college and trained with Sculptor Janice Trimpe, also attended Wayne County Community College and received a Artist Welding Certificate, May 2021. ​ Barbara career began with creating Jewelry. Now it is about whatever comes in contact with her hands. Her medium in the past has been clay, Stone, Wood, Plexiglas and metal. She feels that by the use of many mediums, there is no end to her creativity. She also likes to create Abstract Paintings because it reminds her of her Life's Journey, so many forks in the road, not really knowing where it was going to carry her. ​ What she loves doing is collecting material and start connecting the material not knowing what it will ne until she is finished. Barbara loves what life has to offer her and she is living life. We all have a story to tell and my story is told through my art. My sculptures are representations of how I feel as a being and part of my life. My exposure to prejudice, life experience in where I have been and what I like to share with the Universe. My work allows me to go outside of the box of norms. The times that I had a model for creating a sculpture, I never created exactly as I saw it, I always had to allow my inner guidance help me. This is what I am thankful for, understanding of the power within. ​ The body of my work consists primarily of angles, curves, and showing openness, whether it's through paintings, clay, wood, or metal. One example of this in my work is the Star of David, consisting of triangles and openness. My connection to the Star of David is I'm a descendant of the ancient tribes of Israel. This is what life is about. Some of my figurative sculptures, like the ladies having no arms, reveal restraint yet they stand with dignity, strength and beauty. You deal with the gifts that you were given. Some work that I created has the appearance of openness, with arms as if to wrap around the Universe. My latest metal sculptures are combine with some of my earlier figurative work, to show they are now being supported for who they are. I love adding color to my work, each color has a spiritual meaning. I want my work to evoke to tje viewers that no matter how closed in you might feel you are free to be. ​ Sculptors that I am fond of Henry Moore for his semi-abstracts and Louise Boutgeos for large scale work of spiders positioned over cages.
